Liam Neeson spoke about how he felt an ‘upset in his guts’ due to his latest film’s closeness to his real life.
the Ballymena The actor lost his wife Natasha in a tragic skiing accident in 2009 and will play a widower in his new movie Made in Italy, where he stars alongside his son Micheál.
Speaking on the Graham Norton Show on Friday night, the Taken star said the script was close to home but he thought it would be a good thing to do with his son, Reports live from Belfast.
“When I read the script, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s kinda close to the joint.’
“I felt discomfort in my gut, but thought it would be great to do it and do it with my son,” he said.
Reflecting on the role and whether the two had conversations they might not have had in real life about their grief Liam said, “It was cathartic in a way – the way art can sometimes be.
“There were some very delicate emotional scenes, and I was able to access the emotion without any problem.
“I didn’t need days to prepare for it and I thought Micheál would be the same.
“We had such a delicate producer and such a supportive team that we felt wonderfully at home.”
Micheál also reveals on the chat show that he auditioned for the role because he wanted to get it for his skills, which Liam didn’t seem to know.
“I auditioned for the role for my own dignity. I didn’t just want to get the part because he’s my dad. “
“Did you audition?” I did not know that! Liam responds with surprise.
When asked what it was like growing up with parents of famous actors, Micheál, 25, said it was strange to see his father ‘explode’ on screen.
“I watched all of their movies, but it was a bit traumatic when I was five to watch my dad sliced in half with a lightsaber or blown up in an explosion.
“And kissing someone else too – when I was a kid I thought it was CGI or a Hollywood effect!”
Made in Italy follows the relationship between a father and his son as they go through loss and new beginnings. It is released on Amazon Prime Video from April 26.
Liam Neeson’s son Micheál said the death of his mother Natasha Richardson “disturbed his mind” when he was only 13 years old.
Speaking of the tragedy, Micheál admitted that his mother’s death was “so sudden” that it “disturbed” his mind.
He said Time : “It was so sudden. When it’s unexpected and it’s just a completely freakish accident, it really messes your mind up whether you believe in fate or not.”
Micheál gushed over his late mother as he praised her for being “great” and fondly recalled having “adult conversations” with her.
As a close family, the famous offspring considered their mother to be their best friend.
He added, “She was a great, wonderful mother. What I wish I could just have these adult conversations with her, these random questions about the industry or the music.
“I was a mom’s boy growing up and she really was my best friend. I mean we were all close family, but Danny [younger brother] was my father’s boy and I was my mother’s boy, of course. “
At the time of his death, the family released a statement expressing their shock and devastation at the news.
“Liam Neeson, his sons and the whole family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Natasha,” the statement read.
“They are deeply grateful for each other’s support, love and prayers, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time.”
