ABSTRACT
COVID-19 was first identified in humans in December 2019 and has since affected nearly 68 million people, causing more than 1.5 million deaths worldwide. The control measures implemented to manage the pandemic, such as lockdowns and movement restrictions, have impacted all sectors, including animal health. The objective of the first survey presented below was to assess the impact of COVID-19 on the delivery of public (and private) veterinary services. The aim of the second survey was to understand how the COVID-19 pandemic may have affected routine animal disease reporting and surveillance activities for early detection in countries using EMA-i (Event Mobile Application).
Participants in both surveys reported that the restriction of movement due to COVID-19 has been implemented in their respective countries, which has had a negative impact on the activities of the veterinary services. In the first survey, 93 percent reported that their veterinary services had been adversely affected by COVID-19 and 70 percent reported that it was more difficult for field workers to conduct surveillance activities and investigations into the disease. ground. This result was similar to that of the second survey, where 74% of participants confirmed that the restriction of movement due to COVID-19 affected their work on disease reporting and, 69% said they had received clearance. special freedom of movement to perform their duties.
In summary, the two surveys highlighted the direct impacts due to movement restrictions and fear of being infected with the virus, and the indirect impacts resulting from the diversion of resources from animal health surveillance activities to activities. related to COVID-19.
