Many of us have had a year of questions, chaos, sickness, death, and yet some still have a lot to be thankful for. How about starting each day with gratitude? First of all: “This is the day that the Lord has made. I will be happy about it and I will be happy about it. You have woken up, you can breathe and you can see, and more than likely you can get out of bed. We take life for granted. Have you thanked the Lord? Did you know that all you have to do is open the Bible in the center, it should open to the book of Psalms. Now read one. I personally guarantee you that if you do, you will be high. It is about cultivating a heart of praise and thanksgiving.
It’s time to think about what really matters and what we’re grateful for. David praised God throughout the book of Psalms. He praised God no matter what he struggled with or the problems he faced. As you read the Psalms, you will see how easily the Psalms can be a part of your own walk. Whatever happens, it is always very important to give thanks. Thankful for all things, even if it’s not Thanksgiving. The more grateful you can be, the more you achieve the things you need to be grateful for.
We in the United States, who have not come out of our blessed country, do not always understand what it means to be thankful. As you drive through dusty, barren streets and see women carrying water on their heads in containers under 5 sanitary gallons, you are grateful. As you see people in everything they have it’s on the back, you are grateful. As you see young women suffering from back pain after working with a baby on their back, you are grateful. When you hand out glasses to someone who couldn’t see clearly, you are grateful. When you are able to lay hands on and pray for someone you don’t know, you are grateful.
Each holiday season comes with great expectations, but it can be a season of sadness, anxiety, or loneliness. Harvard medical research helps us understand how gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people have more positive emotions, have good experiences, improve their health, and be able to deal with adversity. Thanking and praising God for bringing you through all the circumstances that come your way.
How is it possible to experience joy and thanksgiving during the chaos and stress that surrounds us? It is through the power of praise and thanksgiving.
