Ludhiana, November 16

Intensifying their agitation against the Punjab government, members of Karamchari Dal Municipality closed the main entrance door to the MC’s Zone A office near Mata Rani Chowk here for nearly two hours on Tuesday.

Members of the association accused the congressional government of failing to regularize the services of contract safai karamcharis, sewer workers and other Class IV employees.

Members waved slogans against the government during the protest and burned an effigy of Local Government Minister Brahm Mohindra. It was the fourth day of the demonstration.

A member of the association said: “Contract sanitation workers have been working for a long time with low wages, but their services have not yet been regularized by the government. Sweepers, sewer workers and other sanitation workers have done their duty with dedication during the Covid-19 pandemic. Even they used to do their duty during the curfew / lockdown period. These employees are doing their jobs under difficult conditions but the government has ignored them.

Association president Vijay Danav said the government has not regularized the services of contract workers to date. Thus, they organize demonstrations against the government.

During this time, visitors were unable to enter or leave MC’s office as union members closed the door in protest.
