Fairfax Youth Initiative is back in 2022

Fairfax Youth Initiative (FYI) is offering two-hour introductory workshops to area schools in Quarter 2 (May 16-May 27) 2022.

Swan Hill Rural Council Mayor Jade Benham said the council was delighted to support the Fairfax Youth Initiative again this year and encouraged local schools to get involved.

“The Council is delighted to continue to support and champion this youth program. We are proud to support programs that focus on enhancing creativity in young people – it’s a great investment,” said Cr Benham.

Fairfax Artistic Director Chelsea Zeller said she will be offering a group workshop aimed at high school students ages 12 and up.

“Our workshop is an introduction to theater through play and collaboration. It’s interactive, light and fun, and is designed to inspire young people to create and perform self-produced material.

“Schools can choose from one of the following introductory workshops to deliver either at your school or digitally via Zoom,” Ms Zeller said.

  • Improvisation: Unleash your inner creativity.

This workshop is an excellent introduction to theater and comedy. Learn performance skills like spontaneity, active listening, idea building and clear communication – all through fun group games and improvisational activities.

  • Narrator: Everyone has a story to tell.

This writing and performance workshop explores storytelling drawn from real-life student experience. Learn generative writing exercises, story structure, and build confidence in communicating and sharing your own ideas and stories.

  • Design the theatre: create your own theatre!

This workshop gives students the tools to design their own short theatrical performance. Explore brainstorming, game building, physical theater, and learn flexibility and play by working as a set.

Ms Zeller said the program aims to provide a platform for passionate and diverse young voices to share their stories with the world.
