Fatal crash with hit-and-run kills Debra Nicole Nelson in Indio
CATHEDRAL CITY, California (March 24, 2021) – 18 years old Debra nelson, of Cathedral City, died Friday after a hit-and-run crash on Monroe Street.
According to reports, a Dodge Dart crashed into a utility pole at a speed of at least 80 miles per hour on Tuesday morning. Shortly after impact, the driver fled on foot.
Nelson was the passenger inside the vehicle and was reportedly 8 weeks pregnant. She was located in critical condition and rushed to a nearby trauma center.
Despite rescue efforts, Nelson was pronounced dead in hospital three days later.
The impact was so powerful that it caused a loss of power to the surrounding area for nearly 30 hours as authorities worked to repair the damage.
In addition, the driver is currently on the run and accused of hit and run. The suspect is believed to be an adult male, although no further details were provided.
Nelson’s mother, Darla Garcia, said she was determined to locate the suspect. They say Monroe Street is busy most of the time, and they think someone must have some idea of what happened. The family also set up a GoFundMe link to help raise funds during this devastating time.
