“The city of Easton will be very different and it will be a big improvement”, Easton City Engineer Travis Winter said of the ongoing street construction project in the small town on Route 109.
Improvements to the city’s main, sanitary and storm sewers are all part of the project. As a result of the work on these elements, the city will also end up with new curbs, street surfaces, sidewalks, driveways and grass.
“The project started with the desire to replace the wastewater treatment plant. The city has looked at their infrastructure and decided on the route they are currently taking ”, says winter. “They received funding from the United States Department of Agriculture as well as money from other sources to help make the project feasible.”
The project will be completed in two phases, according to Winter.
“The first phase is due to be completed this year and includes the installation of the storm sewer, sanitary sewer and water pipe. “ Winter commented. “New curbs and gutters and the first layer of asphalt will also be completed this year. “
Work on the second phase will begin next year.
“The second phase includes the installation of a new water tower”, says winter. “Then we’ll connect Easton to the Town of Wells so Easton can get their drinking water from Wells. “
Winter said he believed Easton’s current water tower was almost 100 years old.
“It was not practical to renovate it. he explained.
Work on the project began this spring. The Holtmeier Construction crews started by demolishing Main Street and installing all the new lines. Other streets that will be affected in one way or another over the course of the project are Cedar, Elm, Linder, Third and Fourth.
“Unfortunately we had to remove some beautiful trees because some of the lines went right under the trees or right next to them”, Winter commented. “But the residents have been very patient with the crews and the construction going on and we are very grateful for their consideration. “
