Veterinary – IMI Site Wed, 16 Jun 2021 13:21:00 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Veterinary – IMI Site 32 32 WSU Veterinarian Team Helps Black Lab Beat Cancer | WSU Insider Wed, 16 Jun 2021 13:00:38 +0000

Kellie Rogers saw no reason to be alarmed when she noticed a trickle of blood coming from the nose of her 12-year-old black Labrador, Josie, last November.

She assumed Josie scratched her nose on a sharp stick as she rummaged through brush in a park near their home in Spokane.

Less than two months later, however, Rogers learned it was a sign of a fatal disease in Josie’s muzzle. This trickle of blood was caused by squamous cell carcinoma, one of the most common tumors that can develop in the nose of dogs.

“My world kind of ended when I was told she had cancer,” Rogers said. “I can’t imagine my life without her and her sister Sophie.”

In January, Rogers, Josie and Sophie, Josie’s littermate, traveled south of Washington State University’s University Veterinary Hospital in Pullman for an appointment with the oncology resident, Dr. Caroline Hohlman. Rogers didn’t expect a miracle, but she hoped to save more time with Josie.

Hohlman, however, hoped she could offer more. Squamous cell carcinoma does not always metastasize and, depending on its location, it can often be successfully treated with surgery.

“Fortunately, the cancer was far enough along in his muzzle that we thought we could get a good result with the surgery,” Hohlman said. “We don’t say the word very often, but with this type of cancer and in some cases, surgery can be curative.

There was a catch: the procedure involved removing a significant portion of Josie’s upper muzzle. Little Animal Surgeons Drs. Tina Owen and Brittany Hyde had lengthy discussions with Rogers to make sure she realized how different Josie would be after the surgery.

“No matter how well you prepare an owner, there’s that kind of shock when he sees his dog for the first time without his nose,” Owen said. “You take a Labrador retriever that will basically look like a bulldog.”

Rogers only cared about one thing: Josie’s health.

“I didn’t care what she looked like,” Rogers said. “I just didn’t want to lose her.”

Rogers dropped off Josie for her surgery on a cold day in mid-February. Although Owen and Hyde say the procedure was among the most complex they’ve ever performed, it appears to have been a success. No cancer has been detected in Josie since.

A black lab with a shortened nose
Josie, the 12-year-old lab, had surgery to remove the cancer and then rebuild her muzzle.

The first part of the surgery involved removing about half of Josie’s upper muzzle from her nose to behind her canines. The second part, the rebuild, was more difficult as they basically created a new muzzle for Josie. In total, Josie spent over two weeks at WSU and became very popular with her goalkeepers.

“She’s really sweet and friendly, a really easygoing dog,” Hyde said. “I have videos of the day she got home. It was so emotional for all of us because she was such a difficult case, and when she finally got to leave, everyone was so excited for her.

Back home, Josie, who Rogers says now looks like a pug, recovered from her procedure and adjusted well to not having part of her muzzle.

Rogers is grateful to the many people who cared for Josie, such as veterinarian student Ryley Carman and surgical technician Chris Dumas. She is also grateful to donors to the WSU’s Good Samaritan Fund, created by WSU veterinary students to help animals whose owners cannot afford the necessary care. While the funds only paid a small portion of the costs, it made a big difference.

“I’ve always known that the vet program is exceptional at WSU, but I could never have imagined how much has been done for it,” Rogers said. “It makes me cry for joy.”

Nova Scotia vet warns dog owners about toxic blue-green algae in lakes Sun, 13 Jun 2021 17:15:00 +0000

HALIFAX – Dog owners in Nova Scotia should be on the lookout for blue-green algae in lakes and ponds this summer after two dogs died from potential exposure to the bacteria, said a veterinarian at the clinic who treated the fatally ill animals.

Juanita Ashton of Elmsdale Animal Hospital said one of the two Golden Retrievers died and the other was suffering from seizures and diarrhea when they arrived at the clinic north of Halifax.

The cause of the illness has not yet been confirmed, but she said symptoms corresponded to exposure to toxic blue-green algae blooms.

“The big risk for dogs is that they usually ingest a lot of water when they go swimming in it,” she said. “If they ingest enough, it is potentially fatal.”

Residents of the area around Grand Lake, near Enfield, Nova Scotia, have been told of the potential danger in the water after one person was hospitalized and two dogs died last week.

Blue-green algae produce toxins that pose a range of threats to the health of humans and animals.

Dogs can develop mild rashes or suffer from organ failure and death, Ashton said.

If a dog is consuming enough bacteria, vets can offer supportive treatments, but “it’s very difficult to get these dogs to a normal state of health,” she said.

While the older dog had died before arriving at the clinic, the younger puppy was extremely ill, Ashton said.

“It was so devastating,” she said. “They were quite simply the best pet owners. They were very responsible.

The Nova Scotia Department of the Environment has said people with wells 30 meters or less deep and located within 60 meters of the lake should not use their well water for drinking, bathe or cook until further notice.

A department official said the water was tested for pesticides, organics and petroleum hydrocarbons, but the toxin produced by blue-green algae is the most likely cause.

“A photo was taken on the first night … and it has this pretty vivid color, suggesting it is blue-green algae,” Deputy Environment Minister Julie Towers said on Friday during a briefing, adding that it came after a series of hot days.

The frequency and size of blooms may be linked to climate change, she said.

“Algae, like any plant, react to heat. We warm up. We are seeing the effects of climate change, ”Towers said. “I suspect we’re going to have more flowers in more locations.”

For dog owners, Ashton said it’s important to keep an eye out for bright green scum on lakes and ponds, especially during a heat wave.

Toxic blue-green algae can range in color from bright neon green to turquoise, olive green, or even red, according to the Nova Scotia Department of Environment website.

The flowers may look like fine clippings of grass in water or a large carpet of foam on the surface. Algae can be seen floating on the surface or suspended in the water.

“When there are hot days, not windy, that’s when bacteria like to form above the water,” Ashton said. “In Grand Lake, it’s a big giant lake, so it won’t be everywhere on that lake, but it could be on the shore.”

The Day – Grasso Tech graduate with a big heart to pursue a career as a veterinarian Sat, 12 Jun 2021 23:52:44 +0000

Groton – Sarah Cruz Velasquez, a graduate of Ella T. Grasso Technical High School, has always had an interest in animals.

She grew up surrounded by pets and was fascinated when she read informational books about cats, dogs, reptiles and other animals.

This interest has continued to grow over the years and she plans to pursue a career as a veterinarian and helping animals.

“I have always had a lot of compassion for them, so I would like to help others give them the best life they can give them and take care of their health as well,” said Cruz Velasquez.

Her school said the career was a natural fit for her due to her kind and caring personality.

Cruz Velasquez, 18, plans to complete his first two years of study at Three Rivers Community College and then move on to the University of Connecticut’s pre-vet program to complete his bachelor’s degree. She would then likely go to Tufts University to pursue her career in veterinary medicine.

At Grasso Tech, Cruz Velasquez not only built an academic foundation, but also learned a skill she will have to fall back on for a job in college: hairdressing. She was in the high school hair salon program to become a licensed hairdresser.

Cruz Velasquez, who grew up learning Spanish and is bilingual, said she developed her strong work ethic thanks to her parents, who immigrated to the United States from Honduras. The family now lives in Montville.

She grew up in a supportive environment where her mother always made sure that she put her schoolwork first. Her father worked hard to maintain the family’s financial stability and selflessly help Cruz Velasquez with experiences he didn’t have as a child, she said.

Since elementary school, Cruz Velasquez said that she tries to be as involved as possible in school, doing her best and talking with teachers about the different ways she could improve her job or contribute to the environment. school. In college, she continued her strong work ethic and did her best to get involved in more clubs.

In high school, she participated in activities ranging from dog walking and babysitting to choir concerts and exhibiting her art in performances. In her barbershop, she cut people’s hair and helped visitors to the senior center by pampering and styling them the way they preferred.

She won the Excellence in Cosmetology Award in her freshman year and excelled academically at Grasso Tech. She was among the best students in her final year.

Damaris Llontop, who taught Cruz Velasquez English II and Contemporary Literature with distinction, said she was a well-rounded person and a role model for others.

“Sarah has a strong work ethic and takes pride in everything she does,” Llontop said. “With her determination, positive character and skills, I have no doubts that Sarah will be successful in her future endeavors.”

Susan Manning, his junior professor of US history and contemporary sciences, said Cruz Velasquez “is bright and thoughtful and can be counted on to tackle any task with determination and a positive attitude.”

Cruz Velasquez said that although she learned a lot academically and through her profession at Grasso, the relationships she forged at school had the greatest impact on her. She said she tried to get involved with her classmates and help them as much as she could.

She said her older sister, Alex Cruz Velasquez, 27, had helped her develop the emotional understanding she had of herself and others and helped her become a kind and understanding person. She said her two sisters are role models and that her 21-year-old sister, who is in the military, is so strong and positive.

Vicki Smallwood, head of the hairdressing and cosmetology department, recalled how Cruz Velasquez’s eyes light up when she receives calls from her sister during the day.

“She is a caring soul who cares deeply for those she is close to,” Smallwood said. She added that she is compassionate, hard worker and reliable, and that she has a pleasant and pleasant personality and a passion for everything she does.

Her family is important to her, and Cruz Velasquez said she enjoys being able to explore Hispanic culture, attend fun gatherings, and enjoy a sense of community.

“I really like it, and I’m really proud to come from a hard-working family who immigrated here and were able to pass this culture on to me and I hope that if I ever choose to have children, I would be able to pass that on to them, teach them and help them discover very important aspects of being Latino or Latina, ”she said.

Her family is also proud of her: “She is incredibly resilient and determined,” said her older sister, Alex Cruz Velasquez. “Besides, she’s so sweet and like a light.”

Alex Cruz Velasquez said it was great to see her sister become the person she is today – someone who will make a difference in the world by caring about her and doing her best to help others. . “I just feel like she’s so good, and the world needs more of that.”

Banfield Pet Hospital cuts revenue with student debt relief Fri, 11 Jun 2021 18:06:32 +0000

When Brian Garish was a young man, he dropped out of college and got a job as a storekeeper at Walgreens. It was a good job, he says, but over time he realized that without a college degree he didn’t have many options. “I depended on the company,” he says.

Garish was fortunate enough to be able to afford to go back to college and complete his education, but he knew many of his frontline colleagues didn’t have that luxury. “This life lesson had an impact on who I became as a leader,” he says.

Today, Garish is president of Banfield Pet Hospital, the largest general veterinary practice in the United States, with more than 3,600 veterinarians working in 1,000 hospitals. Shortly after joining the organization in 2015, Garish and his team reorganized their organizational strategy, establishing a new roadmap that included programs to improve the health and well-being of employees. From the start, he knew that these efforts had to include financial well-being. “Financial health is a problem for everyone,” he says.

Brian Garish, President of Banfield Pet Hospital

Rather than making assumptions about the financial support employees wanted, her team conducted a series of interviews, focus groups, and surveys to determine the financial issues employees were facing and what would help them alleviate. these burdens.

Associates have always said that student debt is one of the biggest financial obstacles in their lives. “It’s not just the case with Banfield,” Garish said. “Student debt is at the center of the Venn diagram for vets, industry and society.”

Dr Kirk Breuninger, vice president of the veterinary quality division for Banfield, agrees. When he graduated from veterinary medicine in 2010, he had $ 250,000 in student debt to pay off, which meant he had to put his life on hold to find a way to pay it off.

“My story is similar to that of a lot of veterans,” Breuninger says. “You can’t buy a house or a car until you have your financial plan in place. “

And the problem was only getting worse. Their research found that veterinarians’ student debt grew larger as public funding for education dried up. In 2015, the average debt-to-income ratio of recent graduates was over two to one. “We saw this as an opportunity to help support our associates,” says Breuninger.

Three-pronged approach

The team in charge of defining the new program, which included Breuninger, came up with 19 different possible program ideas, then presented them to the associates and asked for their opinion. Initially, vets were primarily interested in obtaining a monthly financial allowance to help them pay off their debts. But the team knew they could do more. “We wanted to use our size and scale to do a good job on behalf of our people,” Garish says.

Research has shown that high interest rates are a big part of the debt repayment burden. Banfield therefore partnered with a financial institution that agreed to offer an additional 0.25% interest rate reduction to all Banfield associates who used them to refinance their student loans.

Kirk Breuninger, Vice President of the Veterinary Quality Division at Banfield Pet Hospital

Banfield then combined the refinancing option with a monthly student loan repayment contribution of $ 150, covering all taxes associated with that additional income. The company also provides $ 2,500 for debt repayment to any student who participates in an internship at Banfield, a summer job, or a volunteer activity on campus. They see it as a way to attract students to Banfield and get them to start repaying their loans.

The three-pronged program has received rave reviews from veterinarians and Banfield executives.

$ 15 million invested

Dr. Alea Harrison began participating in the program when it launched in 2017, and it had an immediate impact on her quality of life. She was pregnant with her second child, and even though she had graduated from vet school 11 years ago, she still had a mountain of debt to pay.

“When I heard about this program, it gave me great peace of mind,” she says.

The program put her in touch with a debt counselor who guided her through the refinancing process. She was able to reduce her monthly payment by almost $ 600, on top of the monthly allowance of $ 150 she receives from Banfield. “It was a huge saving,” she says.

And when COVID-19 lowered interest rates, his advisor found him on even better terms, which further reduced his payments.

Harrison is not alone. Almost half of the veterinarians at Banfield Pet Hospital now participate in the student debt repayment program and see similar savings. To date, Banfield has cumulatively contributed nearly $ 15 million to help his vets pay off student debt and has facilitated over $ 16 million in student debt refinancing for associates.

Harrison sees the program as a demonstration of Banfield’s commitment to its employees. “It shows me that they are listening to the needs of their associates and that they are ready to make changes and investments to meet our needs.”

Develop knowledge through retention

Garish and Breuninger see the debt relief program as an extension of Banfield’s commitment to employee education. The company also funds continuing education events and invests in partnerships with universities to support veterinary technical training and other career programs in the industry.

Alea Harrison, Vice President of Veterinary Quality at Banfield Pet Hospital

“At the end of the day, we’re trying to create an environment where someone can come in, even right after high school, and develop the skills necessary for a career at Banfield,” said Breuninger.

These investments are paying off. Over the past five years, Banfield’s turnover rate has been cut in half. This not only lowers the costs of recruiting and onboarding, but it has also created a more competent and knowledgeable staff, Garish says.

He notes that in the past, veterans have spent much of their time teaching new recruits the basics of Banfield procedures, operational standards and workflow. “Now our leaders are spending more time teaching advanced skills and having more impactful conversations about the state of pet care,” Garish said. “It improves the dynamics of the workplace and results in stronger and more efficient teams. “

It also helps them attract great candidates. In a recent survey of new hires, two-thirds of applicants said the student debt relief program played a role in their decision to join the company.

“Student debt is a burden on mental health,” Garish says. “When you solve that burden, it reduces stress, which has a halo effect on an employee’s overall mental health. “

Join the 8 percent

Student debt is a huge burden across all industries, and as the cost of education increases, students are forced to make tough choices about pursuing their academic dreams. Harrison notes that the cost of veterinary training can be an insurmountable barrier for many aspiring veterinarians, resulting in a lack of diversity in the profession. “That’s why there is always a (racial) gap in the veterinary industry. “

Debt relief programs can reduce these barriers and help businesses attract applicants long before they graduate. “It helps us stay competitive,” says Harrison.

Currently, only about eight percent of companies offer student debt relief programs, giving organizations like Banfield an edge over their peers. However, Breuninger encourages other companies to consider similar programs as part of their larger benefit package and commitment to education.

He also advises talking to employees about how student debt affects their lives before starting a program to address it. “Everyone is in a different financial situation,” he says. “These conversations helped us determine what we could do to have the most impact. “

Announcement of border veterinary class exception helps close the gap Thu, 10 Jun 2021 01:10:00 +0000

The New Zealand Veterinary Association is delighted and thanks the ministers of agriculture and immigration for announcing today that the government has granted a border class exception to 50 additional general practice vets to enter the country.

This will help alleviate the critical shortage of veterinarians that has been exacerbated by border restrictions imposed due to COVID-19.

“We are particularly pleased with the timing of this announcement given the tremendous pressure our members are under with regards to animal welfare, biosecurity, production and surveillance and the announcement by the Australian government that it granted exceptions to 800 vets to enter Australia, “said Kevin Bryant, chief executive of the NZVA.

“A continuing shortage has potentially significant effects on the provision of veterinary services to breeders and animal owners. Our members have come under considerable pressure to fulfill their obligations, which is simply unbearable. This announcement gives our members a chance to fight for the help they need.

“Given New Zealand’s successful response to COVID-19, we are confident that this country will be viewed as a positive place to work by vets,” said Helen Beattie, NZVA chief veterinarian.

Last year the government granted 30 exceptions for large and mixed animal veterinarians to enter the country and although this is positive news, those vacancies were quickly filled, leaving an additional shortage of 50 in 100 veterinarians nationwide in all types of practice.

The critical shortage is an ongoing issue that the NZVA is working to alleviate through a range of workforce strategies to train and retain more veterinarians.

“We are actively working with the New Zealand Veterinary Council and Massey University to address these issues,” said Kevin Bryant.
