Mike Eldred, President of Dechra North America, said: “The medical industry has long recognized that harnessing the growth factors present in platelets positively improves healing outcomes and reduces recovery time from soft tissue damage. . These two products will be great additions to our equine product line and will further strengthen our position in the regenerative veterinary medicine market ”.

“ProVet APC has become the most sought-after regeneration system for equine athletes,” said Amy Hassinger, CEO of Hassinger Biomedical. “We believe Dechra is uniquely positioned, with its experience in the veterinary industry, to meet the growing global demand from veterinarians and their customers for the ProVet APC and BMC Regenerative Therapy Systems. “

This addition of Provet APC products to Dechra’s equine portfolio will complement our industry-leading Orthokine® Vet irap joint therapy and provide veterinarians with a single partner for their regenerative medicine needs.

Oro-Medonte veterinarian hosting low cost rabies clinics Mon, 20 Sep 2021 22:00:00 +0000 As part of the annual series organized by the health unit, there will be a pair of clinics in Oro-Medonte on October 13 and 30.

The annual series of low-cost rabies clinics will begin next week in Simcoe County. Clinics provide an affordable way to get rabies vaccinated in dogs and cats over three months old.

The first clinic will take place on Wednesday, September 29 in Creemore, with additional clinics in Barrie, Oro-Medonte, Penetanguishene and Tottenham, until October 30. A schedule of clinics is on the health unit’s website at rabies clinics.

In our region, the Veterinary Services of Oro-Medonte (96, chemin School House in Oro-Medonte) organize two low-cost clinics: October 13 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. and October 30 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The number of clinics in the region is reduced this year, with no clinics available in Muskoka, due to COVID-19 and additional demands placed on local vets. Low cost rabies clinics are offered each year by local veterinarians who voluntarily participate in the program.

Each clinic may have special COVID-19 security measures for frequenting the sites. When going to a clinic, wear a mask, maintain a physical distance, and wash your hands immediately before and after your clinic visit. If you are sick, do not go to a clinic.

One-year and three-year vaccines are available at clinics, depending on the animal’s vaccination status. Pet owners should speak to their veterinarian to determine when their pet should have their next rabies vaccination. It is helpful to take the previous vaccination certificate to a clinic to make sure which vaccine is the best.

“Vaccinating cats and dogs against rabies protects your pet and your family, and it is the law, too,” said Felicia Ratiu, Simcoe District Health Unit Rabies Control Program Coordinator. Muskoka. “We are grateful to the vets who generously donate their time to these clinics. Their contribution helps protect the people and animals that live in our communities.

Clinics typically provide rabies vaccines to about 4,000 pets each year. Due to COVID-19, fewer clinics were able to operate in 2020, when around 1,000 pets were immunized. Anyone unable to make it to the limited low-cost clinic locations can contact their local veterinarian to arrange for their pet’s vaccination.

Thanks to the vaccination of pets, the baiting of wild raccoons, skunks and foxes, and public education, the incidence of rabies in Ontario is lower than in many other parts of North America. North.

In addition to the mandatory rabies vaccination, you can help prevent the spread of rabies by keeping your pets from roaming freely and keeping them indoors at night. Remind your family to stay away from unfamiliar dogs and cats, and all wildlife, including bats.

Rabies is a fatal disease that can be spread to humans through the bites or scratches of an infected animal. In 2020, health unit staff investigated 1,515 animal exposure incidents. Many investigations have resulted in a rabies vaccine for people as a precautionary measure.

For more information on clinics, visit or call Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520, Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Korean pharma enters multinational-dominated pet drug market Mon, 20 Sep 2021 01:03:11 +0000

With the increase in the number of pet owners and the rise of related industries in Korea, local pharmaceutical companies are starting to enter the veterinary drug market seriously.

Korean pharmaceutical companies are stepping up their lead in the local veterinary drug market as the Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted unmet need amid a surge in the number of pet owners.

The size of the domestic pet market has grown from 900 billion won ($ 764.9 million) in 2012 to 5.8 trillion in 2020, according to a pet market report from the Department of Agriculture, of Food and Rural Affairs and the Korea Institute. for industrial economy and commerce.

“The market size of about 6 trillion won is equivalent to the outdoor clothing market, jewelry market and medical device market in 2016,” the report said.

The size of the local veterinary drug market, including quasi-veterinary drugs and veterinary medical devices, has also grown along with the companion animal market. According to data from the Korea Veterinary Medicine Association, the market has grown at an average annual rate of 7% for eight years, from 505.7 billion won in 2013 to 853.2 billion won in 2020.

The problem with the domestic pet industry or the pet drug market is that they are heavily dependent on imports, industry insiders have said.

When the market was small, it didn’t matter much. However, the veterinary drug market has grown sharply against the backdrop of the protracted Covid-19 pandemic, leading to supply cuts or shortages of some drugs.

In this context, national pharmaceuticals began to market veterinary drugs or to create subsidiaries focused on the health of companion animals.

For example, Dongkook Pharmaceutical recently launched Canidol Tab, the first topical treatment for periodontal disease for dogs, and entered the veterinary drug market.

Daewoong Pharmaceutical established Daewoong Pet as a subsidiary and embarked on the development of new drugs for pets.

The company announced the clinical results of DWP16001, a diabetes drug with an SGLT-2 inhibitory mechanism, conducted in companion animals at the Korean Society of Veterinary Science in May.

According to Daewoong, diabetes occurs in about one in 300 dogs and one in 200 cats. In the case of pets, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus is most common, which refers to type 1 diabetes.

“However, to date there are no oral veterinary drugs for the treatment of diabetes, and most of them are given insulin injections as a treatment,” the company said. “Since there is no oral treatment for diabetes other than insulin injections, the company expects DWP16001 to become a new option if we develop drugs for pets.”

Yuhan Corp. and GC Labcell have also entered the veterinary drug market.

Yuhan launched Gedacure, a treatment for dog cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS), in May of last year. The drug is sold in about 10 percent of all veterinary hospitals.

“CDS syndrome in dogs, a disease with symptoms similar to human Alzheimer’s dementia, not only reduces the dogs’ quality of life, but also affects their companion life with their guardians by exhibiting behaviors such as barking. in the middle of the night, ”the company said. noted.

Yuhan explained that when they administered crisdesalazine, the main component of Gedacure, to an animal model of Alzheimer’s dementia, it dramatically reduced amyloid plaques and brain nerve cell death, known to be the cause. of Alzheimer’s dementia.

Due to the drug’s high effectiveness, around 10% of all veterinary hospitals started using it within three months of its launch, he added.

GC Labcell also created in March Green Vet, a company specializing in animal diagnostic tests.

It provides prevention, treatment and healthcare services that can manage the entire life cycle of pets, including diagnostic testing.

GC Labcell expects Green Vet to become a stable engine that will drive the growth of the company as it rapidly enters the market.

“The goal is to take the top market share in animal diagnostic testing next year,” the company said.

Animal Services recognized for its partnership with UF Sun, 19 Sep 2021 09:00:12 +0000
PHOTO COURTESY VOLUSIA COUNTY PROUD WINNER TEAM – Staff at Volusia County Animal Services pose with an award plaque presented earlier this year by the Florida Animal Control Association.

The expertise and competence of local animal cruelty investigations has been significantly enhanced through an innovative partnership between Volusia County Animal Services and the University of Florida Veterinary Forensic Science Laboratory.

And now, this county-UF partnership has been recognized statewide as a recipient of the 2021 Florida Animal Control Association (FACA) Award for Achieving Outstanding Co-op Team.

While extremely proud of the award, Director of Animal Services Adam Leath said the partnership helps ensure cases in Volusia County involving animal cruelty, welfare or suspected abuse are treated with the highest level of care and professionalism.

In addition to serving on the Board of Directors of the National Animal Care & Control Association, Leath is also an Assistant Professor of Courtesy at UF’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

“The working relationship we have been able to develop with the Laboratory of Veterinary Forensic Sciences has really improved animal services in Volusia County,” said Leath. “We improve the lives of animals and people by combining the strengths and resources of both organizations. It’s a true partnership in every sense of the word, and we’re very proud that the Florida Animal Control Association has recognized the shared efforts and impacts of our teamwork.

An international leader in veterinary science, UF and its veterinary forensic medicine laboratory are committed to helping and supporting animal cruelty investigations. And he’s putting his expertise to good use by helping train Volusia County Animal Control Officers in specialist skills, such as investigating crime scenes, excavating underground graves, and how to identify, to document and perform a forensic examination of victims of animal abuse.

At the request of Volusia’s Animal Services, the lab also provided veterinary autopsy services in several cases, providing the forensic evidence that facilitated the filing of criminal charges, successful prosecutions and, most importantly, the rescue of animals in deplorable living conditions.

It is this high level of excellence in animal welfare, care and control that has earned statewide recognition for the co-op program, according to an award letter earlier this year. from FACA President Darcy Andrade to Volusia County Animal Services and UF.

“On behalf of the FACA Board of Directors and FACA member agencies, thank you for your dedication and outstanding service in promoting animal welfare,” Andrade said in the letter.

A UF veterinary professor said the county’s successful partnership could lead to more in the state.

“The 2020 partnership between the University of Florida Forensic Science Laboratory and Volusia County Animal Services has been extremely successful and may serve as a framework for additional partnerships for other agencies,” said Dr. Adam Stern, associate professor of forensic medicine at the UF College of Veterinary Medicine.

How to Get Treatment for Your Sick Pet with FirstVet Veterinary Video Service Sat, 18 Sep 2021 20:00:00 +0000

Whether you own a cat, dog, or something more exotic, chances are you’ll need to see a vet at some point. Even with the best care in the world, our animal friends can still get sick or injured, and it is our responsibility as caregivers to make sure they get the help they need.

Thanks to the internet, talking to a professional veterinarian has never been easier, and with an app like FirstVet, you can have an online consultation with a fully qualified veterinarian without even leaving your home.

What is FirstVet?

FirstVet Online Veterinarian

FirstVet is an independent digital veterinary service that provides online video consultations to pet owners seeking advice or support. You can use it in the US, UK, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark, and the service is available 24/7.

Although you can use FirstVet on your computer, the service is best used through the FirstVet app which is available for Android and iPhone.

To download: FirstVet for Android | iOS (Free, payment for consultations may be required)

How does FirstVet work?

Before you can start using FirstVet, you need to create an account. To do this, download the application and then register your animal. If you have purchased pet insurance from one of FirstVet’s insurance partners, your video calls with FirstVet are free.

When you need to make an appointment with FirstVet, just open the app and tap Book a video call.

Next, select the animal you are booking an appointment for, then choose whether you want to speak to a FirstVet vet for health advice or a behaviorist who can discuss things like barking, dog training methods or aggression.

On the next screen you will see all available appointment times and which vet takes each session. To book a video consultation, select the appointment you want, then describe your pet’s symptoms and attach pictures if they can help your vet during your consultation.

If you are going to attach pictures to your notes, try to make sure they were taken in a well-lit area using the correct camera settings and provide a few different angles.

You will receive an SMS a few minutes before the start of your online consultation. You just have to reconnect to the application to start the call.

Once you have spoken with the vet, they will send you a follow-up email with all the notes taken during the session and their recommendations. If the online vet feels that your pet needs to be seen in person, they will forward these notes to your local vet and encourage you to make an in-person appointment.

Can FirstVet prescribe medication?

Prescription drugs can only be prescribed for your pet if it has been seen in person. This means that FirstVet cannot directly prescribe medication.

Fortunately, most straightforward cases can be resolved without a prescription, but if a FirstVet vet thinks your pet needs a prescription, they’ll refer you to your local vet with a full medical record of the consultation along with suggested treatment. .

Because FirstVet cannot prescribe medication and is a completely virtual service, it is best to use it for minor cases or general advice. In these cases, FirstVet can reassure you or help you care for your pet at home. If your pet is seriously injured or very ill, it is best to make an emergency appointment with your local veterinarian immediately.

How much does FirstVet cost?

If you have purchased pet insurance from a FirstVet partner insurer, your video consultations will be 100% free. If you don’t have pet insurance or have it with a non-partner, all US-based consultations are $ 35, including nights, weekends, and days holidays.

Alternatively, you can sign up for an unlimited FirstVet membership costing $ 65 for six months or $ 90 for one year. A subscription entitles you to unlimited FirstVet video views at any time.

Obtain health advice on the Internet

While digital veterinary services still have a long way to go before fully replacing face-to-face appointments, they serve a vital role in the pet care market. Services like FirstVet make it easy to get professional advice online and help free up local veterinary services for those who need it in an emergency and in person.

So, the next time you’re worried that your dog has eaten something they shouldn’t have eaten, or that your kitten has a weird stain on their chin, you might want to try a digital vet service.

Animals late to shelters due to veterinarian shortage – NBC Los Angeles Fri, 17 Sep 2021 22:45:17 +0000

If you’ve recently tried to get your pet to a vet, you know it can take weeks to get an appointment due to the nationwide shortage of vets.

Part of the reason for this shortage is that a high number of people adopted animals during the pandemic, but it is also in part because vets and veterinary technicians have a high rate of burnout.

Many vets earn less than half of the amount paid by doctors, despite the high cost of training.

“The liability is extremely high when you go out as a licensed veterinarian,” said Ashlee Sprague, vice chair of the board of directors of Priceless Pets. “The work is extremely hard, the hours are long, the pay is not incredible.”

The shortage of vets leads to overcrowding in shelters, as animals cannot be adopted until they are spayed or neutered.

“You envision it taking around six to eight weeks for a regular checkup for your personal veterinarian, let alone a shelter animal,” said Shelley Fonglesong, vice chair of the board of directors at Upland Animal Shelter.

At Priceless Pets in Chino Hills, the only full-time vet is struggling to keep up with demand.

“It’s very frustrating,” Sprague said. “We are already a low cost clinic, so we are a lot of people’s last resort before returning pets to the shelter for medical problems.”

Some pet owners who are unable to find cheap veterinary services resort to abandoning their animals.

“So they will either choose the cheaper alternative which is unfortunately euthanasia, or turn it into a shelter,” Sprague said. “They will let him go like a stray animal … Unfortunately, this only increases the amount of admission to shelters and more and more pets are being euthanized. This is a big deal.”
